KENINGAU: Religious festivities are opportunities for the people in the country to strengthen the unity and relationship with one another.PKR Council of Elders Deputy Chairman Robert Linggi urged the people in the interior to take the opportunity to play their roles in building a peaceful society for the sake of the country's wellbeing.

"I also hope that NGOs and individuals who have been doing things that can break up the people to adhere to the law of the land. If they were found guilty of breaking the law, the government is obliged to take action against them, irrespective of their political background, race or religion," he said.

Commenting on the recent spate between leaders in Umno and Perkasa President Ibrahim Ali, Linggi said religious and racial issues are sensitive issues and those guilty of committing offences which can further fracture the fabric of the society should be dismissed to ensure the people in the country can live in peace and harmony.

"These incidents will affect foreign investors' confidence in the country. Even now, investors are no longer actively investing in our economy. The government is also having trouble repaying its debts," he said.

Linggi also voiced out his concern over the appointment of a foreigner to sit at the helm of Malaysia Airlines instead of appointing a Chinese or Indian Malaysian.

Other than that, he said the federal should change its policy and give more power to the Sabah and Sarawak governments through a fairer distribution of power.

"That way, Sabahans and Sarawakians can work out their own way of living just like during the British colonial times. Right now, everything depends on Putrajaya," he said.
