Go to the ground, do not spread unconfirmed news: DPM

PUCHONG: Go to the ground and help those affected by the flood, instead of spreading unconfirmed news in the social media – advised Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to social media users who are responsible for spreading false reports on the situation in the flood-hit states in the country."Keep the handphones and go to the ground, see how members of the security team work without sleep to help the victims.

"Don't sit in air-conditioned room and spread all the fictitious information," he told reporters after attending a briefing on the latest flood situation in the affected states at the National Disaster Control Centre here.

Muhyiddin said in times of disaster, like during flood, there would be a lot of discomfort, but the situation was not as bad as was painted and that the government was doing its level best for the victims.

"We have to understand, the condition at the evacuation centres is not as comfortable as staying at home, the food is not as nutritious, but we have done our best to avoid people losing their life," he added.

On the Subang Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) base been made a collection centre to receive aid for flood victims from the public, Muhyiddin suggested the setting up of sub-centres in the other states.

On the school opening for the new term on Jan 5, he said the government would provide the necessary assistance to those affected by the floods.

Meanwhile, in KUALA LUMPUR, several groups carried out an initiative to demonstrate their concern for the flood victims in the affected states.

Among those involved were Malindo Air, Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (ACCIM), MCA Youth and Gabungan Wawasan Generasi Felda (GWGF).

Malindo Air, in collaboration with the Tesco emergency response team, is sending 15 tonnes of humanitarian aid to Kota Baharu in flood-hit Kelantan.

According to a statement from the airline, a Malindo Air plane carried five tonnes of food supplies today and the rest of the emergency aid consignment were expected to be delivered.

Meanwhile, ACCIM said its flood relief fund had to date received donations of RM500,000 as well as 1,000 cartons of mineral water worth RM30,000 for flood victims.

"ACCIM has also been contacting its members to solicit donations for essential food and goods as well as medicines," it said in a statement.

Meanwhile, MCA Youth today launched the 'Youth Care' fund to assist flood victims in the affected states especially in the East Coast of peninsular Malaysia.

MCA Youth chief, Chong Sin Woon said the contribution would be utilised to buy dry food, basic necessities and kitchen utensils for distribution to the victims.

"In addition, we will also use the contribution to repair the structural damage to the buildings and rebuild the damaged houses due to the floods in the areas affected," he said at a media conference, here.

In Shah Alam, Gabungan Wawasan Generasi Felda (GWGF) launched the Flood Aid Mission to assist Felda settlers affected by the floods in Pahang, Terengganu and Kelantan.

GWGF chairman Tan Sri Rozali Ismail said 20,000 bottles of five-litre drinking water and 500ml would be distributed immediately to the flood victims who were facing difficulty in obtaining clean water supply. – Bernama
