KENINGAU: Former Tenom MP Datuk Rizalman Abdullah (pic) hopes people in the interior, including Tambunan and Beaufort, will maintain cleanliness in their respective areas and villages. He said the level of cleanliness in the interior has improved a lot, especially in Keningau and Tenom towns, unlike in the 1960s.

He said this was the result of cooperation between the people and the Government.

"Good hygiene ensures good health for all. If cleanliness is not maintained, many diseases will surface," he said.

However, Rizalman urged the residents of Kg Lingkudau Tengah whose population comprises mainly Filipinos holding identity cards to improve the level of cleanliness in their village.

He said in 2004 a fire broke out in the village and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) had built 16 housing units for the villagers.

"They (villagers) should give full co-operation to the Government and local community. The level of cleanliness in the village needs to be improved."

Rizalman said he received complaints from the public who said many people in the area often threw garbage outside their homes, into paddy fields, rivers including the Bariawa River and also on the road.

"If they do not change their attitude, the village will certainly be filled with garbage that can easily lead to outbreak of diseases. If this happens, the health of not only villagers but also residents in other areas, especially Keningau, would be affected," he said.

Therefore, Rizalman urged the Government to educate the villagers there about the importance of hygiene.

"Although they have been living in the village for a long time, the level of cleanliness is still deplorable, especially the dumping of garbage into rivers, which will eventually end up in rice fields and orchards along the riverbanks.

"Therefore, it is pertinent for the residents of Kg Lingkudau Tengah to change their attitude and keep their village clean," he said.

A resident of Kg Lingkudau Tengah, Smirad Juman, 68, said he came to Sabah 48 years ago and had constantly reminded his neighbours not to throw rubbish into the orchards, paddy fields and rivers but these were ignored.

He said he had also made a complaint to the relevant authorities but no action was taken.

Therefore, he hoped community leaders as well as heads of departments would take note of this so that the level of hygiene in the village would be improved.
