Giving captive bears in Sabah a better future

SANDAKAN: One other ongoing Small Grants Programme-funded project is the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre (BSBCC) which was established here in 2008 through collaboration with the Sabah Wildlife Department, Sabah Forestry Department and Land Empowerment Animals People (Leap).BSBCC Sdn Bhd had earlier received a grant for the project from the Global Environment Facility-Small Grants Programme (GEF-SGP). The GEF-SGP is funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and executed by the United Nations Office for Project Services (Unops).The Centre's Development of Environmental & Conservation Education Programme to raise awareness about sun bears through direct interpretation with visitors is one of the 17 SGP projects in Sabah under Operational Phase 5 (OP5).

BSBCC Environmental Education Officer, Gloria Ganang said the organisation promotes sun bear conservation through rehabilitation, education and research. One way is to conduct outreach programmes targeting local schools.She said it serves as an education centre to increase public awareness about sun bears, the threats they face as a species, and the importance of protecting their habitat."Sun bears are the smallest bears in the world. Their survival is threatened by habitat loss, illegal hunting and killing as well as capture for the illegal pet trade," she said.Ganang said the civic-conscious public can help sun bears through any of the following ways:

According to her, BSBCC has been working with various organisations, government and on-government, as well as individuals who share the same interest and passion throughout the past six years since its establishment."Partnership with these entities has played an important role in the development and achievements of the Centre," she said.
