TUARAN: The State Government welcomed Sunday the announcement of a special government aid of RM500 million by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Tun Razak for victims in states affected by the floods.Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman said such noble announcement showed that Najib and the Federal Government are very concerned for the welfare and well being of victims nationwide.

"Allocation of such special funding by Najib shows his sincere concern and empathy of the losses and difficulties faced by victims in those states affected by the natural disaster.

"In fact, the announcement of the particular aid was very timely that would help to lessen the burden and hardship of the victims," he said, at the Christmas Open House of United Pasokmomogun Kadazandusun Murut (Upko) at a community hall in Kiulu.

About 500 people attended the event and among those present were Musa's wife Datin Seri Faridah Tussin, Upko Acting President Datuk Wilfred Madius Tangau, its former President Tan Sri Bernard G. Dompok, Special Tasks Minister-cum-Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) President Datuk Teo Chee Kang, former Kiulu assemblywoman-cum-widow of former Chief Minister Tun Fuad Stephens, Toh Puan Rahimah Stephens, Deputy State Speaker Datuk Johnson Tee, Kiulu Assemblyman Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, Sabah MCA Chief Wilfred Yong and other officials.

Najib was reported as saying that the RM500 million fund consisted of aid for victims whose houses and vehicles were damaged by the floods. It would be managed by the National Security Council (MKN) and disbursed after the floods.

However, he said the fund did not include the allocation to be specified later to repair damages to educational institutions, government buildings, mosques, suraus and others.

Over 100,000 people nationwide were evacuated to relief centres after floods hit 10 states. The affected states are Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, Perlis, Perak, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Johor and Sabah.

Meanwhile, Tangau was also thankful for the announcement of the special funding of RM500 million. He said the flooding situation in the peninsula was extraordinary and serious until more than 100,000 houses were submerged.

"The natural disaster that hit the affected states cannot be avoided and thus Najib's announcement of the RM500 showed the government's concern on the flooding that has seriously affecting the people's wellbeing.

"We in Sabah are also affected by the flooding but not as bad. Therefore, we should be grateful," he said.

To a question, Tangau said based on a rule, flood victims who have been relocated must first be considered and eligible to get the government aid.
