Selangor: Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal said MaraA's sponsorship of students abroad for this year stays although it needs to implement austerity measures."We will take measures to assist including to reduce trips and unneccessary programmes. MARA is an important institution for Bumiputera entrepreneurs and students pursuing higher studies," he told reporters after attending the Mara Senior Management Workshop 2015, here Monday.

Shafie said the meeting with Mara senior officers was to restructure and increase the agency's capacity in the 11th Malaysia Plan (11MP).

"We will restructure with the aim to enhance the delivery system to help Bumiputeras in education and entrepreneurship.

"We are dissatisfied with what has been achieved and must raise our capacity. We are facing a challenging economic landscape and have to reduce spending," he added.

Meanwhile, Mara's deputy director-general of education, Azmi Mohamad said Mara will change the strategy of sponsoring students abroad.

"We will reduce the number of undergraduate students and increase the number of graduate students who take one or two years as the cost is much lower," he added. – Bernama
