Kota Kinabalu: Penampang MP, Darell Leiking expressed appreciation to the recent statement by Attorney General, Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail relating to the position of Sabah within the Federation of Malaysia."We now know that even the A-G had called for a proper and rational discussion as to whether all the safeguards intended to protect the interest of Sabah/Sarawak prior to formation of Malaysia have been observed properly or not," he said in statement.

"It is important that we attend to the root causes as to why disgruntled Sabahans and Sarawakians are talking about secession these days and yes, I still believe that the current discontent is due to their opinions that Sabah/Sarawak being grossly marginalised all these years," he said.

Leiking said that more Sabahans were now talking about the marginalisation of Sabah and that some of Sabah's BN Members of Parliament were even complaining about the State's poor conditions in debate speeches during the tabling of the Federal Budget in Parliament .

"If Sabah's BN MPs themselves are complaining, what more the ordinary Sabahans on the street?," he said.

Leiking also lamented that it was unfortunate that his motion (for the establishment of a Special Committee to the review of the Malaysian Agreement 1963) which he presented in Parliament on November 2013 was rejected for being not 'Urgent' .

He said the establishment of this Special Committee (which was promised to be formed every 10 years from the date of the formation of Malaysia) would have been able to conduct the review and ascertain which part of the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (and its Annexures) has not been fulfilled or performed," he said.

He reiterated the call for a special committee to be formed to review the terms of the Malaysia Agreement 1963, it annexures along with all other treaties and memoranda executed prior to the formation of Malaysia.

"All these documents are intended to secure the well-being and interest of Sabah/Sarawak as the pre-condition for the two states to form the Federation of Malaysia. Therefore, being the equal partners that form a country known as Malaysia, Sabah/Sarawak have all the rights to have these documents being reviewed again."

Leiking said he would attempt to submit another motion calling for the establishment of the Special Committee when Parliament convenes and hoped that other parliamentarians would jointly do the same.

"There is an urgent need to look at, study, review and establish whether the Malaysia Agreement 1963 has been performed or otherwise because only by doing so, we will be able to conclude whether the Federation of Malaysia today is what Sabah and Sarawak had aspired it to be in 1963," he said.
