Kota Kinabalu: Universiti Malaysia Sabah's (UMS) Borneo Marine Research Institute will help channel high quality fry and offer expert advice in aquaculture to develop the State's fisheries stock. Its Director Associate Professor Dr. Rossita Shapawi said this during a river awareness campaign organised by the institute's community project on stock enhancement of the giant freshwater prawn in Petagas river.

"We will offer our moral and physical support to the community project committees to ensure the success of all their activities," she said, adding that the community project in Petagas river had started in 2012 and was launched by the university's chancellor then, Professor Datuk Dr. Kamaruzaman Ampon.

The project, she explained will benefit the people in Putatan district especially in terms of the cleanliness of the river.

She said that they had released giant freshwater prawn fry per year totalling up to 23, 000 in the river.

"We have also organised a series of awareness campaigns involving the public, Village Development and Security Committee, school students as well as pupils," she said.

Assistant Putatan District Officer Hassan Mahali who represented Putatan District Officer Awang Abdul Ghani Pg Yusoff also urged those who live nearby the river to be committed in taking care of the river's cleanliness.

"We have held lots of awareness campaigns and 'gotong-royong' activity but all these would be pointless if the people keep on disposing their rubbish into the river.

"I hope that the community will benefit from this programme. It is the hope of the leaders to see that our rivers are clean due to the district's location nearby the city," he said, announcing the Chief Minister's upcoming visit to the district in February.

There were a total of 100 students from SK Petagas and SK Contoh who participated in the river awareness campaign.

During the awareness programme, UMS lecturers Dr Annita Yong Seok Kian and Dr. John Madin also delivered two short lectures on freshwater prawns and river pollution.

Besides that, there were also several activities carried out among the students such as drawing and colouring competition, scrap book competition, interactive quizzes and games.
