Kota Kinabalu: Malaysia's Chairmanship of Asean 2015 is being commemorated through three special stamps. It also marks Malaysia's 4th Chairmanship of Asean and the most historic as we established the Asean Community, the culmination of almost five decades of region building.By noon Wednesday, the post office here had run out of first day cover envelopes and "Our Community" 80 sen stamps issued by Malaysia to mark the occasion launched by Chief Minister Datuk Musa Aman before the Asean Foreign Ministers dinner function.

Three kinds of stamps were released to tell of the story of South East Asia's most prominent grouping which today comprises 10 countries.

The Asean story began forty eight years ago, when Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines joined hands to form an association that would help bring about a region of peace, freedom and prosperity for their peoples.

Since then, 10 other nations have joined representing the 7th largest economy in the world and the 3rd largest in Asia.

First, the "Our People" stamp with a face-value of 60 sen depicts a handshake which symbolises the strength of the relationship between Asean member countries.

The friendship that exists among Asean members of various races, religions and cultures is the core strength and pride of Asean. Elements of this diversity is mirrored by the characters that represent the 10 member countries of Asean wearing their respective traditional costume and saying 'welcome' in the respective language.

Second, the "Our Community" stamp with a face-value of 80 sen depicts 10 raised hands which symbolise the spirit of the Asean agreement in realising the Asean Community.

Each Asean member country plays an important role in the effort to maintain harmony and stability in the region. Regional cooperation covers three main pillars of Asean, namely political-security, economic and socio-culture.

Third, the "Our Vision" stamp with a face-value of RM1.20 depicts a hand and tree under a cloud flanked by flags of Asean countries symbolise the vision and aspirations of Asean member countries.

The 10 leaves are likened to how the 10 Asean countries mutually cooperate with each other to form the Asean region that is prosperous, competitive and respected by the international community.

Each stamp carries more knowledge than a textbook when the person is keen in the collecting stamps. Stamp collecting can become a part of teaching process and when the children are used to it, they will learn more on their own.

Stamps are also all about asking questions, why, when, where, who, what, how... It is also about appreciating events and things all over the world and around us.
