M'sia shares UN concern over terrorist attacks

Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia shared the United Nations Security Council's deepening concern over the marked increase in terrorist attacks around the world. Malaysia's Permanent Representative to the UN, Datuk Hussein Haniff, said Malaysia remain deeply concerned over the escalation of armed conflicts and violence in several situations around the world.

"In this context, we are disappointed that the council was unable to reach consensus on addressing the deteriorating situation in Yemen. At the same time, the deteriorating humanitarian situation in several conflict areas, including Palestine, Syria and Ukraine, continues to remain high on the council's agenda.

"It is a matter of concern that the council remains sharply divided on these situations," he said at the Security Council briefing on "Implementation of the Note by the President of the Security Council" in New York on Thursday. The text of his speech was faxed to Bernama today.

The session was presided by Chile's Permanent Representative to the UN, Cristian Barros Melet, who is the President of the UN Security Council for this month.

Hussein said Malaysia, as a UN Security Council non-permanent member, hoped that the council members would continue to work towards bridging differences to discharge the UN Charter-mandated responsibilities. Malaysia reaffirmed its commitment to contribute in that regard, he added.

On working methods, Hussein said, Malaysia was pleased to note the council's continued use of technology, including through the use of video tele-conferencing facilities, to engage and interact with the UN presence on the ground.

"We also note that on many occasions, the council has reacted promptly to address certain developing situations, including through early issuance of press statements. We believe that prompt reactions by the council are an important feature of its work and should continue," he said.

Hussein said Malaysia commended Chile for organising three open debates during the course of its presidency, namely the Situation in the Middle East, Inclusive Development and the Maintenance of International Peace and Security, and Protection of Civilians.

Meanwhile, Malaysia also took the opportunity to congratulate the delegation of China for its upcoming presidency of the Security Council, a post which is rotated among members for a one-month term.
