Kota Kinabalu: Sherell Ann JeffreyPolice have brushed aside a message alerting people of a group of men in the city who fool people into thinking they are maintenance workers before robbing them at gun-point.

The message, which was circulated via WhatsApp on Friday, quoted a cable news channel as announcing that 30 police uniforms were stolen from a laundry outlet in the city.

The message also warned people to be aware of three or four men entering residential areas and claiming to be maintenance workers to install shower caps, to save water or change electric bulbs for free before robbing them at gun-point.

State Police Commissioner Datuk Jalaluddin Abdul Rahman said there has been no such crime reported in the capital.

He said a similar message was also circulated via WhatsApp but the location was identified as Subang instead of Kota Kinabalu.

"This message has been cooked up, its content is not true and has no connection to Kota Kinabalu," he said.
