Attempt to smuggle out cooking oil, petrol foiled

Sandakan: Marine police here foiled an attempt to smuggle out 36 boxes of cooking oil and 48 jerry cans of petrol hidden in four speedboats spotted heading towards the Philippines on Thursday. State Marine Police Commander ACP Muhamad Madun said 25 boxes of the cooking oil were found in one boat, while 11 more were found in one of the four boats, while six jerry cans of petrol were found in one boat and 42 more were found in one of the four boats. He said an "Ops Taring" and "Ops Pensura" were mounted to monitor the river at Mile 3 after receiving a tip-off between 4.30am and 4.40am.

The four speedboats raised suspicion when they were seen heavily laden and seen heading towards the Philippine waters. "As our team approached for inspection, the four boats suddenly sped," he said, adding that the team managed to stop the boats.
