Kota Kinabalu: The inaugural Asia Pacific Cross-Regional Sevens mooted by Asian Rugby Football Union (ARFU), the Asia Pacific Cross Regional Sevens concept sees the best teams in Asia pitted against the best teams around the world who are just below the World Sevens series standards.ARFU President Trevor Gregory when met at the Eagles Rugby Club here yesterday said he is happy with the way the tournament is going and the potential it has as the results will enable those who do well to qualify into the Sevens World series.

"This is the first time we are doing this and I believe this is the future now because our Asian teams as we prepare for the Olympics qualifiers, we need the top teams to be playing against the other teams in the region.

"That's why this is the future. Our Asian Sevens series are very mature now some of the teams are getting a bit strong and so we need those teams to play against strong teams from other regions," he added.

ARFU, he pointed out, would love to see this tournament grow now with participation from other regions such as Africa and Europe.

He also praised the organiser and host, Eagles Rugby Club for doing a job and added that everybody is raving about the pitch at the club.

On rugby development, Trevor was of the opinion that it is a good idea to have younger players in the tournament as part of rugby development in the region.
