More Sabah rural schools score 100pc STPM passes
Papar: More rural schools in Sabah recorded 100 per cent passes in the Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) compared to previously, said State Education Director Datuk Jame Alip.He said more than half of 51 schools that scored 100 per cent passes in the national exam were from rural areas while the rest from urban districts.

"I am very pleased that the results of 2014 reflected more quality than quantity.

"The most glaring achievement was that of the 51 schools with 100 per cent passes, 27 are rural schools and 24 urban schools, which means rural schools are showing a huge improvement," he said, when announcing the results at SMK Takis, Monday.

Also present were Papar Education Officer Abidin Marjan, 51 principals and other officials.

He said SMK Takis here topped the list of 51 schools for having highest School Point Average (GPS) of 3.02 followed by SMK Merotai Besar, Tawau (2.93 GPS), SMK Elopura II, Sandakan (2.92), SMK Putatan, Penampang (2.88), SMK Jalan Apas, Tawau (2.85), SMK Kunak, Kunak (2.83), Sekolah Tinggi Kota Kinabalu (2.81) and SMK Madai, Kunak (2.80), among others.

He announced the names of 16 top STPM students who scored straight As in all the subjects, including two top excellent students – Fong Jian Yip of SM St Mary, Sandakan and Amirah Binti Abdin of SMK Arshad, Kota Belud.

Fong and Amirah were selected by the Malaysia Examination Council (MPM) to be among the national best STPM students in the country and were in Selangor to receive their certificates of excellence from MPM Chairman Prof. Dato' Dr. Mohd Noh bin Dalimin.

He said Fong was selected for the urban school category while Amirah for rural school category from Sabah.

Jame said such achievement showed that students in rural schools are on par with those in urban areas, including in peninsula and Sarawak.

He attributed the success to good collaboration and cooperation between the district education officers and principals working together to further improve academic performance of their respective students as well as tackling the students' weaknesses.

He said the STPM results also showed an increase of one top student in which there emerged 16 top students compared to 15 last year.
