Sandakan: The recently concluded Borneo Sevens 2015 could spur the interest from the younger generation on rugby sports.Minister of Youth and Sports, Datuk Tawfiq Abu Bakar Titingan, said this is evidenced with the number of local youths that took part in the championship that saw eight international and well-known rugby teams also participating.

"From what we have seen throughout the tournament, the rugby teams from within the country also showed strong performance," he said.

He said the ruggers also have the opportunity to gain experience and learn new skills and strategy from the tournament and thus enhance the sport in the State.

To this, he challenged local ruggers to rise up to the call.

He said rugby in Sabah is in good hands with both the State Government and the Sabah Rugby Union and Eagles Club all committed to develop and spur the sport.

And by having imported players in the tournament, it would improve the standard of local players, he said.

On women rugby players, Tawfiq said their participation in the week-long tournament showed that the tough sport is not a hindrance to their interest.
