SRU's devt programmes bearing fruit

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Rugby Union's (SRU) grassroots development programmes that started 14 years ago has started to bear fruit in Sabah.SRU deputy president Dr Kah Hock Tan said development programmes which focused on primary and secondary schools, has resulted in 80 schools participating in the programmes throughout the state.The programmes involved students aged from seven to nine and 10 to 11.

Sabah rugby's latest success was winning the 31st edition of the Agong's Cup when the tournament was hosted in Selangor. Hock Tan said that a number of players from Sabah had also managed to break into the junior boy's, men's and women's national teams.On Sunday, the Borneo Eagles edged defending champion Daveta, 22-21 in the final to win the 14th Borneo Rugby Sevens, en route to denying the Fijian side from accomplishing a hat-trick in the tournament.Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.

Hock Tan who is also the Malaysian Rugby Union vice president said success was however, not achieved instantly but through proper planning of a long term programme.

He added that excellent facilities available at the Borneo Eagles Rugby Club in Bandar Utama IJM, Sandakan had also assisted in the development of rugby in the state as well as helped Sabah host international tournaments. – Bernama
