Kota Kinabalu: Sabah's overall performance in the 2014 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) dipped slightly, with fewer students scoring all As than in the previous year. Of 32,197 candidates who sat for the examination, only 160 students scored all As in all subjects, down 216 from 376 candidates in the 2013 SPM examination. In announcing the results, State Education Director Datuk Jame Alip on Tuesday said Sabah scored 5.56 in the National Average Grade, down by 0.26 points from 5.30 in 2013. The lower the points the better. "The number of students who passed in all subjects also dropped to 13,030 or 40.47 per cent compared to 13,849 or 40.69 per cent in 2013," he told reporters at a press conference at Wisma Pendidikan, here. ADVERTISEMENT "However, the number of students who qualify to receive their certificates went up by 0.7 per cent to 87.89 per cent from 87.19 per cent the previous year," he added. According to the Education Department Director General, fewer students scored A+, A and A- due to the change of format in questions. He said a drop in the number of all A students was due to the habit of forecasting questions and that this led to them to revise their lessons in the old way. Previously, you can spot questions. However, from last year, we changed the format for questions. The questions and standard of questioning are the same, but answering them demands thinking in a different way.ADVERTISEMENT "However, candidates who focus on lessons and knowledge will continue to secure excellent results," he was reported as saying in Putarajaya earlier. Out of 58 subjects taken by SPM candidates across Sabah, 13 subjects achieved 100 per cent passes, namely Literature in English, Additional Science, Domestic Construction, Furniture Making, Nursery and Landscape, Aquaculture, Food Crops, Sign Arts, Basic Interior Designs, Multimedia Production, Computer Graphics, Chinese Literature and French, he said.
