Kota Kinabalu: Immigration officers implicated in the visas-for-money scam involving Pakistanis will face the wrath of the department in Sabah.State Immigration Director Noor Alam Khan assured it would mete out disciplinary action against the eight immigration officers who have been picked up by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

He said the type of disciplinary action would depend on whether they are convicted of the offence in court, adding they have for the time being been re-assigned to administrative work.

"We carried out our in-house initial investigation on the concerned immigration officers even before the MACC embarked on its investigation.

"The department needs to seriously look into the claims or allegations made against these immigration officers, and headquarters will determine the type of disciplinary action to be taken against them should they be convicted," he said.

Noor Alam was responding to a statement by Star Sabah Chief Datuk Dr Jeffrey Kitingan, who questioned why no action had been taken against these officers.

He said a grave injustice would have been done to the people in Sabah and the State if these officers were not charged in the scam said to involve millions of ringgit and which MACC said was causing Sabah to be flooded by Pakistanis.

Towards this end, Dr Jeffrey said the Technical Committee of Foreign Migrant Management under Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan should immediately investigate the matter and not just rely on the Immigration Department.

In February and early March, seven Pakistanis were arrested for staying in Sabah with visas obtained fraudulently with false details on their marital status via a syndicate involving immigration officers.

MACC Prosecuting Officer Awang Samsul Baharam Bungso who said they embarked on an investigation following a public complaint early this year, added that the agency has in its possession a list of the wanted Pakistanis.

He did not disclose any figure but said MACC was expecting to make more arrests with the help of Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) throughout the State.
