Kota Kinabalu: Maria Magdalena Werang took another step towards emulating his brother Adam Lindbichler success in fencing with the captured of her first international foil individual title in the recent China Open Fencing Championship on April 19."A diamond in the making," said Sabah Fencing Association(SFA) President Datuk Alex Sham on the 16-year-old.

"Maria, is the upcoming star for fencing not only for Sabah but also for the National team in the coming year and I expect her to be in the National team to compete in the next Sea Games 2017 in Kuala Lumpur.

He said the success of Maria is due to hard work and her never say die attitude during competition.

" In sports especially during competition it is too easy to just give up when the going is tough and you are in a tight spot, but to press on to achieve success out of nothing is a rare breed.

"She is one of those who never likes to lose, she will keep on trying to get back the lost points until she is succeeded, and her triumph in the China Open was the result of this."

Alex also praised SFA coach Bobby Chiew for his effort in grooming Maria.

"Bobby as the personal coach of Maria played a big part for her success and it also proved the capabilities of local coaches, and the public must take notice of that as well ."

Meanwhile Maria told Express Sports that she was inspired by Adam four years ago after learning of his success at the World Championship held in Catania, Italy in 2011.

The sabre fencer, who will take part in the coming Singapore SEA Games in June was then making his debut in the competition, stamped his mark by outshining some of the more seniors team mates to finish in 80th place among the elites.

Maria who had won a bronze in Sukma previously thanked Bobby and another state coach Godwin Chong as well as her parents for their guidance and support.

"Not forgetting our President Datuk Alex Sham who has given me the best fencing suit for the competition that I had earlier promised to bring back the gold for the state," she said.

Another fencer from the state Lim Yin Yin also contributed a gold in the same championship with her victory in the women épée individual event.
