Selangor: The country is facing an integrity crisis, with youths willing to succumb to corruption to climb the career ladder, said Transparency International-Malaysia (TI-M) President Datuk Akhbar Satar. He said an international survey found 41 per cent of youths would get involved in corruption if given the option and similarly, a survey by Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission in 2003 found that 30.5 per cent of university students would do the same.

"In other words, they don't mind getting involved in 'hanky panky' to get to a higher level. We are facing a crisis when it comes to upholding integrity," he said at a youth debate on 'Integrity and Corruption'.

"It is in their system, so if we are not careful and do not take preventive measures, they may influence others."

The youth debate was held by the organisation to combat corruption among youths.

"We hope to encourage the youth to come out and give us ideas because theirs are more relevant to 'Generation Y' while our ideas may not be as receptive to them," said Akhbar.

"If we don't try and understand the youth and stop this from becoming worse, the country could be ruined in the future."

"We also encourage them to speak to their peers and spread the message to collectively fight corruption."

Akhbar said his organisation would pick up points from the debates and apply them to combat corruption.

The hour-long parliamentary style debate saw six debaters arguing the motion: 'It is legitimate for progressive voters to bribe politicians to ensure change'.

Both sides provided current examples of how corruption had — or had not — contributed to the change of policies in government and civil society. However, both teams reinforced that the views mentioned during the debate did not necessarily mean they shared similar sentiments.
