Selangor: National badminton ace Datuk Lee Chong Wei has expressed confidence that the country's squad for the upcoming Sudirman Cup will give a commendable performance in Dongguan, China from May 10-17.The former world number one, who had an eight-month break from the badminton scene due to a doping offence, said the selection of players by the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) under technical director Morten Frost Hansen, such as back-up shuttler Cheam June Wei, should not be questioned.

"I feel Frost has made the right decision in fielding a young player such as June Wei as it will be the best avenue for him to learn something from the best players from other countries," Chong Wei told reporters after a contract extension signing ceremony between BAM and a local telecommunications provider.

Chong Wei, named Malaysia's captain for the tournament, is joined by June Wei in the men's singles; Tee Jing Yi and Lim Yin Fun (women's singles), Tan Wee Kiong/Goh V Shem (Mak Hee Chun) for the men's doubles; and Vivian Hoo, Woon Khe Wei (Amelia Anscelly) in the women's doubles.

Noting that this year's Sudirman Cup would be a tough one due to the expected stiff challenge from India and South Korea in Group 1D, he nonetheless was optimistic that Malaysia would at least make it to the quarter-final stage.

Meanwhile, BAM deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Norza Zakaria who was also present confirmed that the BAM had sent an appeal to the Badminton World Federation (BWF) to seek its approval for Chong Wei to compete in the 2015 World Championships in Jakarta, Indonesia from Aug 10 to 16.

BAM was reported to have already submitted the names of Chong Wei Feng, ranked 31st in the world and Zulfadli Zulkiffli (41st) for the championships but with Chong Wei eligible to play after his suspension was lifted, the BAM hopes to include the former world number one.

"We only have until May 14 to submit the final list for the World Championships," he said. – Bernama
