Putatan: Deputy State Education Director Maimunah Suhaibul said the permanent building for SK Penimbawan is already about 80 per cent complete."The temporary building structure which attracted much attention in the news for lacking walls now already has its walls in place. It is already a conducive and comfortable place for pupils to study," she said.

Maimunah said this to reporters when asked on the developments regarding the much talked about "school without walls" in Tuaran during a press conference after the flagging-off of the State-level Kembara UPSR programme at Dewan Belia Pasir Putih, here, Tuesday.

On the three schools - SK Pekan Kiulu in Tuaran, SK Gadong in Beaufort and SK Bawang in Tamparuli – which were affected by fire incidents last year, Maimunah said they have already called for tenders and the selection process has been carried out but they have yet to award the contract to a company.

"However, it will be carried out soon as the allocations are already there. We are however still waiting for (word from) the selection committee."

On this year's Kembara UPSR programme event, she said more than 150 principals and headmasters were involved in the programme and they will return to their respective schools and districts to carry out the programme at their schools to give the motivation and mock exam modules.

"It would be carried out by Sabah Headmasters Council (Majlis Gurubesar Sabah) where they will go to the schools to give motivation to the schools which will be holding UPSR this year and also distribute examination practice question modules.

"Our hope is that this year we can achieve the average school grade of 2.20 for the State. Each school has been given targets. If we achieve this, then our achievement will be at national level. We haven't yet achieve this national level at the moment."

She said education in the State had made a great step forward the last two years.

"Sabah was among a small group states that moved ahead in the UPSR performance while the majority (of other states) didn't. This is a source of pride for the State where it shows that it can improve its UPSR performance.

About 200 Year Six pupils from SK Putatan were also present at the venue for motivation talks to prepare them for the UPSR.
