Kota Kinabalu: About 7,000 people are expected to turn up for this year's Mother's Day Walk Abreast organised by the Kinabalu Pink Ribbon. The event, to be held at 6am on May 10 at Padang Merdeka, is expected to be graced by the association's patron, the Head of State's wife, Toh Puan Hajah Norlidah Tan Sri R M Jasni.

For the first time, the 4.5-kilometre walk will take place within the city centre.

City Hall will be collaborating with Kinabalu Pink Ribbon in the event with the full support of the Community Development and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Jainab Ahmad.

According to Kinabalu Pink Ribbon's President Natrah Datuk Mohd Arif, breast cancer affects one in every 19 women in their lifetime in Malaysia.

It remains the most common cancer among women affecting all races from the age of 20 and is considered the deadliest among all cancer diseases, she said in a press conference at City Hall, here, Wednesday.

"It is through this realisation and concern that we have actively been, for the last five years, campaigning to increase public awareness and education on breast cancer and breast health issues," she said.

Among the highlights of the half-day programme will be the formation of a human pink ribbon – a symbol of breast cancer awareness, lucky draws with 100 items to be won, raffles draw that offers a Yamaha Scooter as the top prize and two other top range prizes.

"Gifts will also be presented to the pinkest and most creative participants or groups," she said, adding that there will be also a Go Bald programme whereby one of the survivors' husband will go bald in support of his wife's experience throughout her cancer treatment.

There will also be a balloon parade and in honour of all breast cancer survivors, patients, departed members and mothers, tributes through songs will be rendered by survivors and all participants are invited to sing along.

Natrah also expressed her appreciation to all relevant ministries, police, corporate bodies, companies, individuals who had contributed cash as well as refreshments.

Those who require further information on the event may contact Kinabalu Pink Ribbon Office's at 088-216 237, Natrah at 019-860 0408, Lucilla at 019-810 1826 or Nancy Tham at 019-861 8993.
