Empowering KRT and SRS to prevent crimes

Kota Kinabalu: The government through the National Integration and Unity Department (JPNIN) will ensure the empowerment of the Neighbourhood Watch Areas (KRT) and Volunteer Patrolling Scheme (SRS) for the safety of all communities. "I believe both the KRT and SRS are capable of preventing crimes, apart from instilling a neighbourhood spirit among the people," said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Tan Sri Joseph Kurup.According to him, the handing of patrol equipment to SRS by the department will help motivate the members in doing night patrols.

"The KRT should cooperate with enforcement personnel in ensuring the safety of the area," he said during the launching of the Neighbourhood Safety SOS Application at the Kampung Tanjung Aru Lama open hall, here, Tuesday."Besides that, KRT also plays an important role in curbing dengue," he said, adding that he will be signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enable the KRT to collaborate with the Health Department on May 10 in combating dengue. On the SOS application on smartphones, Kurup explained that it is a special app which would forward information directly or via online to the police. The system, which was created by a Sabahan, was aimed to curb and prevent crimes from occurring in neighbourhood areas as it could channel information faster and efficiently and bring in criminals.
