Hunt for brother of ex-Minister
Kota Kinabalu: Police launched a hunt for the brother of a former Federal Minister and top Selangor politician who allegedly shot a man in the leg at a car air conditioning workshop along the Jalan Tuaran By-pass in Inanam, here, Wednesday. The 43-year-old Malay from Shah Alam, known as Mat Malaya, was described by police as armed and dangerous.

The case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder.

State Police Commissioner Datuk Jalaluddin Abdul Rahman said the man who operates alone has a record for drug trafficking, including in Sabah.

In 2008, he escaped the death sentence when the High Court here freed him on a charge of trafficking in cannabis. He was also discharged and acquitted of having syabu.

Police believe the man is still in the city and those who know his whereabouts are advised to immediately alert the police.

Preliminary investigations showed that at about 2.30pm on Wednesday, a 36-year-old local assistant mechanic from Telipok Ria went to the workshop to have his Proton Iswara fixed.

"When he reached the workshop, he saw a man sitting inside the premises staring at him like he was not satisfied with something.

It was learnt that the latter had also sent his Honda vehicle to the workshop.

"This prompted the former to confront the latter, leading to a heated argument between them," Jalaluddin told a media conference held at the Karamunsing Police Station, here, Thursday.

Also present were State Criminal Investigation Department Chief SAC Datuk Salehhudin Abd Rahman and City Police Chief ACP M. Chandra.

A struggle ensued and the latter took a pistol out from his pouch and pointed the firearm at the assistant mechanic who tried to avoid getting hit when the latter fired three shots.

One shot hit his right leg but he managed to call a friend who rushed him to the Likas Hospital. He subsequently lodged a report at about 9.55pm the same day.

Jalaluddin said a forensics team went to the scene and a mechanic at the workshop told them that he heard an argument followed by gun shots.

The forensics team found two gunshot markings inside the premises and an empty shell outside.

Inspection was also done on the Honda vehicle left by the suspect at the workshop, a black mask, one pistol holster, one plastic containing substance believed to be syabu and one electronic weighing scale believed used to weigh syabu found inside the vehicle.
