Tawau: Five major projects are being implemented by the Ministry of Works in the State at a cost of more than RM900 million, said Works Minister, Datuk Fadillah Yusof. They include the Package I, Jalan Donggongon-Papar upgrading project worth RM232 million, the Jalan Segama Phase I upgrading project (RM108m) and the upgrading of the Tawau–Semporna road (RM170m).

Also listed are the Jalan Petagas-Lok Kawi Phase 1A and 1B upgrading project (RM137m) and multi-level interchange project in the city amounting to RM261m.

In addition, the Ministry is planning to implement two new projects namely the Donggongon-Papar Package II and III road upgrading project worth RM380 million and the upgrading of Jalan Petagas-Lok Kawi Phase I amounting to RM32 million.

"Both projects are expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2015 and the ministry is also implementing the construction of 85 slopes in the State at a cost worth RM421, 251, 696.80," he said.

Fadillah said this at the opening of the Sapulut-Kalabakan road worth RM270 million here, on Friday by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman.

The event was also attended by Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan, Deputy Works Minister Datuk Rosnah Abd Rashid Shirlin, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Tawfiq Abu Bakar Titingan and Kalabakan MP Datuk Seri Abdul Ghapur Salleh as well as state and federal cabinet ministers.

Fadillah said the Sapulut-Kalabakan Road construction started as a gravel road in 2004 under the 8th Malaysia Plan (8MP) and 9MP and in 2011 under the 10MP, the road was upgraded from a gravel road to a paved road entirely.

According to him, the original construction of the road was a 145 kilometer gravel road by the Ministry which upgraded the road to a 145 kilometer paved road.

He added that the main objective of an alternative route to Kota Kinabalu without going through Sandakan and Telupid is to complete the road from Tawau-Kalabakan-Sapulut-Nabawan-Keningau and on to Kota Kinabalu shortening the journey to three hours from Tawau-KK.

"In addition, the project will complete the Pan Borneo road link in Sabah although Sapulut-Kalabakan road is still listed as a State road," he said.

In the meantime, Fadillah also asked the Ministry of Transport and its agency to establish a vehicle weigh scales to control the weight of road users to ensure the longevity and safety of the road.
