Kota Kinabalu: One of the reasons for the growing presence of Barisan Nasional figures in social media is to build a sense of connection with the younger generation. Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said there had been thorough discussions over the rejuvenation of Barisan Nasional and admitted that the ruling coalition was once outnumbered on such platforms.

"Senior politicians, too, can play a role and be connected to the younger generation via various platforms.

For instance, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, 64, from the BJP party was able to topple his opponent from the Congress Party, Rahul Gandhi, who is about 20 years his junior through the use of the social media," he said, during the fourth Kupi Table Dialogue, held here.

He noted that Narendra was able to connect to his young voters through the presentation of his policies, which were targeted at the young and thus won their votes. Rahul, on the other hand, although from a family of Indian political leaders, his presence online was not so overwhelming.

A writer, Elviza Michele, opined that the Sedition Act should be repealed as there were enough provisions in the Penal Code to charge those who incite hatred in the country.

She concurred with lawyer friends that Section 121 and 505 of the Penal Code has all it needs to protect Malaysian society from seditious materials.

She urged the Government to repeal the Sedition Act and revealed that society today is "matured enough to decide what is wrong and right."

"I think we should repeal that (Sedition Act). What bothers most of us is that the line of definitions of being seditious tendency tend to be a bit blurry.

So it's hard to define what is tantamount to being seditious," she said. Khairy had earlier said that the Government had amended the law, saying no action will be taken against those who were critical of the government.

It only applies to those who incite religious and racial hatred as well as those who promote the secession of Sabah and Sarawak from the Federation. The Minister also said the Act would be used fairly and will not be only on selective application.
