Kota Kinabalu: A power transformer at the Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) sub-station in Bundusan was damaged in a fire in Penampang, Wednesday. No power outage were reported in the fire which was believed to have started at about 1am. According to a source, the sub-station has five transformers and only one caught fire.

"Efforts are being done to investigate the cause of fire," he said.

A total of 29 officers and personnel from the Penampang, Lintas and Kota Kinabalu Fire and Rescue Department took several hours from 1.44am to finally put the fire out at about 5.44am. Nobody was reported hurt.

A reporter at the scene claimed that security guards at the substation rudely drove away reporters taking photographs of the fire from outside the substation fence.

On April 2012, some 500,000 consumers were affected by power outage throughout the State when a power transformer in the same substation caught fire after an explosion.

Power was eventually restored through stages in most of the major towns the same day.

On Jan. 17, last year, Sabah was hit by a total blackout, which was a repeat of a similar incident in 2012, this time due to an Independent Power Producer's (IPP) decision to shut down its gas turbines for safety reasons.

Preliminary findings revealed by SESB showed that Ranhill's power plant in Sepanggar decided to shut down the gas turbines after encountering a technical problem, causing power to fluctuate and trip.
