Panawari Tamu is held again in Nabawan
Sabah: The Panawari Tamu Besar should be held every year to foster a peaceful and harmonious community, said Assistant Minister of Infrastructure Development cum Nabawan Assemblyman Datuk Bobbey Ahfang Suan.He said it was the first time it was held in Nabawan since the British occupation and called on the community especially the locals to not forget their culture as well as their own race's traditional handicrafts.

He said this after launching the event here on Thursday.

Among the 5, 000 people attending the event were Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, Datuk Ellron Alfred Angin, Nabawan District Officer, Fredian Gan En Siong, village chiefs and department heads.

Bobbey said he was only a child when he experienced Panawari in the fifties and sixties during the British occupation.

"Then had so much activities including giving the chance for farmers to exhibit their produce such fruits, vegetables, handcrafts and others. Many also took the opportunity to buy the produce.

"It was a culture that could attract the local community to build their own economy for their own income while others could easily buy cheap things without encountering a middle person."

He also called the people particularly those outside of town to diligently cultivate their crops as to get more produce to be marketed to outsiders and also asked corporate groups to head over to Nabawan to help build the district which sits by the border of Kalimantan, Indonesia.

Meanwhile, Bobbey said he was proud that people came all the way from around Pensiangan, Kabu and Bantul to join in the festivities this time round, hoping the promising start will see the event continue in the years to come.
