K’gau plans  to become  agri hub and  farming tourism  destination
KENINGAU: Keningau is planning to become a hub for agriculture and farming tourism destination in the State, Assistant Minister of Local Government and Housing, George Hiew Vun Zin said.

“So, I hope the councillors here will present their ideas to assist the local authorities achieve this target,” he told reporters after witnessing the swearing-in ceremony of Keningau councillors at the District Council’s meeting room here on Tuesday.

He said, in view of the plan that is envisaged as able to boost the district’s economy, the councillors can assist the district council in this endeavour by ensuring the smooth planning of both projects.

Hiew said that Keningau is not only known for its agriculture produce but also for its orchards particularly the Musang King durian.

“I am confident that the councillors can carry out their duties well and work together with the local authorities and I am confident also that in the future this district will progress considering that many agri products in Sabah came from Keningau.

Meanwhile, District Council Executive, Mumin Amsah, said that the installation of oil traps for eateries in Keningau town have been implemented since five years ago.

He said that based on the council’s records, 93 premises have already had such traps implemented at its respective premises while 70 premises have yet to be implemented.

“The installation of this oil trap is helpful in improving the quality of hygiene and health in particular the eatery premises.

According to him, since January this year about 149 compounds have been issued by the enforcement unit under the Anti Rubbish by-law of 2010.

Mumin said the enforcement unit will continue to ask all eateries, especially those that have yet to install the oil traps to install it so as to prevent clogged drains and unpleasant odours.

He said the District Council wants Keningau town to be in tip-top condition so as to create a clean and comfortable atmosphere for the comfort of the visitors. 

Earlier, Hiew witnessed the swearing-in of 18 out of 19 Keningau councillors before the District Council Chairman cum District Officer, Haji Faimin Kamin.

Also witnessing the event were Senior Assistant Secretary to Local Government and Housing Ministry, Haji Awang Bakar Awang Hussin, Political Secretary to the Chief Minister, Adzhar Eddy Tan Sri RM Jasni, Political Secretary to the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Martin Tommy, District Council Executive Officer, Mumin Amsah and Heads of State and Federal Government Departments.

The sworn-in councillors were  Koh Piaw Peng @ Koh Kian Ling, Ambrose James @ Ambrose Jaimis, Ir Egbert Manjin, Lasimin Majani @ Lasmin, Jikol Tagua, Blasius Juatol, Margaret F. Tambakau, Chu Wui Leong, Hamdy Azmi, Hanafiah Aziz, Natra Michael, Albert J. Malintau, Sharin Shafri, Steffi Devy Michael, Antomak @ Louis Udog, Alice Jusit, Cecelia Poyoyou @ Damasus and Joanes @ Dannie Onson.

The remaining member of the Council who have yet to be sworn-in is Lee Hiam @ Richard Lee.
