KOTA KINABALU: Team Karabaw ruled supreme in the inaugural Sabah Open Muaythai Championship held over the weekend at the Datuk Salleh Sulong Hall in Papar.
There was no overall title to be won but they were the most successful team among the 20 who took part in the three-day competition, having won 11 gold medals in addition to five more silvers and four bronzes.

The gold winners were Akmal Zaim (boys 1-10), Phylbert Chin (boys 11-13/34-36kg), Aryan Isaac Azry (boys 11-13/38-40kg), Md Azrif (boys 11-13/48-50kg), Md Hanif Imran (boys 14-16/55-58kg), Jezzabelle Jerry (girls 8-10), Amirah Nazihah (girls 11-13/34-36kg), Eva Annatasha (girls 11-13/44-50kg), Rodney Einstein Eddyvictor (male open/44-46kg), Kallen Barthez (male open/60-63.5kg) and Kenny Jafili (male open/67-70kg).
The silver medals came from Marshall Jayden Jerry (boys 11-13/34-36kg), Chester Archie (boys 11-13/38-40kg), Wyeren Chow (boys 11-13/45kg special bout), Isaac Emmanuel (boys 11-13/48-50kg), Leonard Kok (boys 11-13/52-54kg) while the bronze delivered by Miquel Angel (boys 14-16/55-58kg), Nurin Batrisha (girls 11-13/34-36kg), Cindy Tiong (female open/57-60kg) and Perry Junior (Male Open/44-46kg).
Meanwhile, Elias Ghazali of SS Fighter Sarawak won the main event by beating Reyyan Abdul from Kinabalu Kings while the co-main event was won by Maureen Hii (D30) with the defeat of Dolphina Walter Tony (SS Fighter Sarawak).
Team Karabaw’s Jerry, Kitkat and Asmawati also won their respective semi-pro fight on the night.
A total of 181 fighters took part in the event organised by Sabah Muaythai Association (SMA).
Present at the closing ceremony were MSN director Mohd Asneeh Mohd Noor and SMA President Nazri Ab Razak who is also vice President of Malaysia Muaythai Association.
