Sabah in hunt for two new imports
KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Tambadaus are now on the lookout for two foreign imports instead of one following the release of their Brazilian import Luiz Carlos Junior on Sunday.

The 29-year-old signed by the team early this season and who had scored four goals and Sabah Football Association (Safa), both agreed to part ways in good terms.

With the latest development, Sabah are now left with only South Korean defender Park Taesu and Serbian hitman Rodoljub Paunovic as their two foreign imports following the earlier departure of on loan Luka Milonovic who has since returned to Melaka United.

Team manager Henry Saimpon, who thanked Luiz for his contribution and wished him the best in his future endeavours on Sunday, said they will try their very best to find the best available replacements before their next Premier League match.

They are currently checking out Turkmenistan international midfielder Ahmet Atayew, who had started training with the team since Friday while former Angola national striker Aguinaldo Veiga Mendes joined the team on Saturday.

The 30-year-old Aguinaldo, who had once played in Thailand top tier league, last featured for Poli Lasi FC in the Romania Super League while the 28-year-old Ahmet featured in the Indonesian League since 2017 with clubs Arema and Persela.

“If they do make the team, we will try to feature them in our next match as we all know, the second round is expected to be even tougher and we need to take advantage of the open transfer window to strengthen the team,” he said.

Safa acting President Datuk Peter Anthony had on Friday also disclosed that they may try to get more players during the open transfer window if there is a need to further strengthen the squad.

Meanwhile, Sabah are currently in second place in the table standing with 21 points, just three behind leaders, JDT II and one ahead of UiTM who have 20.

Their next match is against UKM away on May 17 followed by another away match against Penang on May 25 before playing home against Negeri Sembilan on June 15.
