Kota Kinabalu: Women Affairs Department Sabah (Jhewa) will hold an awareness programme on Child Marriage on July 9, in Ulu Sugut , Ranau at the Ulu Sugut Secondary School’s hall.
Director Masturah Hj Jamrah (pic) said Assistant Minister of Health and Wellbeing Norazlinah Arif is expected to officiate in the event.

The programme will be held in the remote area as most child marriage occurred in the interior of the State.
“There are communities that carried out marriages without taking into consideration the girl’s age, especially those under 18 years old. This ensue into a marriage without considering the physiological and psychological aspect of the girl concerned,” she stated.
“With the programme by Jhewa it is hoped that it will create awareness and knowledge to children, families and the community pertaining to child marriage issue in the state,” she said in a statement.
Through the programme, she said the target group will be accorded guidelines and skills in understanding the psychology, personality, marriage, law, family life, reproductive health, guidance and counselling.
Masturah said among the target groups are children aged between 13 to 17, parents, counsellors, teachers and school counsellors as well as those concerned such as facilitators and community leaders.
“We expect 500 participants to attend the programme where five talk sessions and presentations will be carried out,” she added.
According to her the five lecture slots and presentations include “Introduction to the Module Implementation by Dr Muhammad Idris Bin Bullare @ Bahari and Puan Dayang Siti Rohani Sedan, “Understanding Psychology, Personality and Marriage” by Dr Muhammad Idris Bullare @ Bahari and Puan Dayang Siti Rohani Sedan, “The Law’s perspective on Child Marriage “ by Puan Noor Azah Abdul Rahman, “Family Life Education and Reproductive Health “ Suzanna Piny and “Guidance and Counseling Programme” Dr Hajah Ananglangka Mad Kassim and Ednan Muyong.
She said, the Sabah Women Advisory Council (SWAC) has also taken the initiative and proactive effort by forming an interactive Modul on Child Marriage (MIPK): Dealing with Child Marriage on the ways to handle issues pertaining to the subject concerned.
