Sipitang potholes repaired: PWD
The Public Works Department (PWD) will step-up efforts to check on the condition of those roads under its maintenance in Sipitang.

This follows a complaint about the presence of potholes near a petrol kiosk in one part of the town.

A PWD spokesman said the concessionaire repaired the damage a day after being alerted to this problem.

“We have asked the firm to ensure that its surveillance-team takes more trouble to monitor the road as the stretch is under the Department’s jurisdiction,” he said.

He said the Department’s staff had noticed that potholes had formed in the stretch over the past few months.

“This may be an unfortunate consequence of the heavy rains which the district has been experiencing on and off.”

The spokesman said scheduled maintenance was carried out on the roads around the district from time to time.

NOR of Telipok bemoaned the presence of potholes on the sections of the stretch when she visited the town recently.

She estimated that some of the “holes” were almost half a metre deep.

“The uneven surface of the road damages the undercarriage of our vehicles,” she said.

“There is no way to avoid going over these potholes as they span the width of the road.” Nor said she voiced her frustrations about these road woes to a friend who lives in the district.

“My companion told me that the condition of the stretch had gradually been deteriorating.

“He suspected that the damage was caused by the many heavy vehicles, including 10-tonne lorries, which regularly used the route.” Nor wondered why the local authorities had turned a blind eye to the problems involving the stretch.

“I phoned the PWD shortly after I returned to the State Capital.

“I understand from my friend that nothing has been done to minimise the difficulty which road-users are facing since then.

“I hope the agency does not wait until there is bad accident and someone gets injured, or worse, before it intervenes.”  (SS)
