Bid to smuggle in 7,000 turtle eggs
SANDAKAN: The Marine Police here foiled an attempt to smuggle in 7,000 pieces of turtle eggs at a river area of Mile 2, here on Monday.

Commander of Marine Police Regional 4 Sabah ACP Mohd Pajeri Ali said the turtle eggs with an estimated value of RM12,600 were found inside a pump boat.

“The seizure was made based on information and patrolling by Marine Intelligence Unit on a PSC 13 PPM Sandakan patrol boat at 2.30am.

“During patrol at the area we came upon a pump boat which later sped off but stranded at the shallow area of the river.

Mohd Pajeri said the boat’s skipper managed to flee from the scene after the boat was stranded.

“Upon inspection on the boat which came from a neighbouring country, we found 7,000 turtle eggs on board believed to be for sale to the public in the area,” he said.

The estimated value of the entire seizure was RM16,000. It was brought to the Marine Police Sandakan operation base for documentation before being referred to the Wildlife Department for further action.

The case would be investigated under Section 41 (1)(4)(a) of the Wildlife Conservation Enactment 1997 which carried a fine not less than RM50,000 and not more than RM250,000, and jail-term up to five years if found guilty.
