City status for S’kan plan
Kota Kinabalu: THE Local Government and Housing Ministry is looking at elevating Sandakan’s status to that of a city.

Deputy Chief Minister cum Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Dr Jaujan Sambakong said Sandakan has shown great potential to become the second city in Sabah and works to achieve this are currently being worked out by the Ministry and Sandakan Municipal Council.

“Sandakan is suitable to be upgraded into a city. The Ministry is currently looking at this. It is not only Sandakan, there are other districts which also have the potential to their status upgraded,” he told a press conference at the State Assembly building Monday.

On the rubbish and dumpsite issue, Jaujan said his Ministry will strive to educate the people in Sabah on the importance of waste management.

“The Ministry wants to increase awareness among the people, which I believe is the most important, in our effort to resolve the waste management issue in the State.

“Waste management aspects should not be left on the shoulder of the Government alone, as everyone must play his or her part in resolving this issue.

“It is important for us to educate the people on how to properly handle their waste,” he said.

Jaujan also disclosed that he had been approached by a number of people who shared the idea of using waste at dumpsites to generate power for the State, but these were just proposals.
