KOTA KINABALU: An integrated public transport system is vital to address traffic congestion in the city.

Addressing the issue in a town hall session organised by City Hall here, its Transport and Traffic Department Director Kalvin Liaw said there is an existing Public Transport master plan to resolve the perennial traffic flow problem faced by the people, especially the motorists, in the city.

He said it is a two-phase master plan, one is to improve the existing bus services and the second is looking into the public transport system for the city such as mass rapid transit system (MRT) and light rail transit (LRT).

“We already submitted the proposal to build MRT or LRT to the Federal Government and now we are waiting for the budget.

“If the budget is enough, I believe we can provide an efficient and well-planned public transport system,” he said.

Liaw said traffic jams are inevitable, especially nowadays when the trend is car-centric.

He said road widening would not solve traffic issues as the number of cars will keep increasing in the future.

“The growth of private vehicle ownership is six per cent a year and no matter how big the road, there will still be traffic jam.”
