SANDAKAN: The Marine Operations Force (MOF) seized about 9,000 turtle eggs through two operations, here, so far this year.

Commander of Sabah (Region 4) Marine Operations Force, ACP Mohamad Pajeri Ali, said it shows Sabah MOF is committed to stopping smuggling of the eggs which come from a neighbouring country.

“No suspects were caught, but this is among MOF’s major successes besides smuggling of illegal cigarettes, liquor and other activities,” he said after a visit to Turtles Islands Park at Pulau Selingan, here.

Besides Selingan Island, Turtles Islands Park in Sandakan also includes Pulau Bakkungan Kecil and Pulau Gulisaan.

The visit was to ensure the park areas are always safe from any intrusions, among others.

He said security, so far, at the turtles conservation park is safe and well managed. Last year, Sandakan MOF seized 10,000 turtles eggs through five smuggling cases with all the eggs also from a neighbouring country.

The case was referred to the Sabah Wildlife Department and Sabah Parks for further action. Pajeri praised the related agencies that are very concerned on turtles conservation and smuggling of eggs. Also present were Sandakan MOF Commanding Officer DSP Rusdin Banin and Ranger Officer of Turtle Island Parks, Pulau Selingan, Abd Rahman Kahalan.
