KK-Hangzhou friendship city pact

HANGZHOU: Hangzhou of the People’s Republic of China and Kota Kinabalu of Sabah, Federation of Malaysia, signed an agreement on the establishment of Friendship City relationship at Marriott Hangzhou Qianjiang, here, Friday.

Vice-Mayor of Hangzhou City, Wang Hong signed on behalf of the Hangzhou Municipal Government while Mayor of Kota Kinabalu, Datuk Nordin Siman, signed on behalf of Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK).

Sabah Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Christina Liew, who led a 12-member delegation from the Ministry, DBKK and Sabah Tourism Board (STB), witnessed the signing ceremony. She was accompanied by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Nordin, William Baya, STB Chairman Ken Pan Ying On and President of Sabah-China Chamber of Commerce (SCCC), Datuk Frankie Liew.

Liew, who is also Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, said the move is in accordance with the principles of the Joint Communique on the Establishment of Diplomatic Relationship between the Federation of Malaysia and the People’s Republic of China.

Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Government continued its momentum in managing the economy in line with the commitment and spirit of the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) when it posted record high state revenue of RM6.973 billion last year.

“The aim is to enhance mutual understanding and friendship between the Malaysian and Chinese people,and consolidate and develop friendly cooperation between the two sides. I am happy with the outcome of our inaugural meeting with the Vice-Mayor of Hangzhou City, which led to the signing ceremony,” she said.

The agreement states that both cities will promote friendship in order to develop cooperation based on mutual respect, and foster a friendly environment in exchange of diverse information and knowledge for mutual benefit and development.

Both cities will support international exchanges in fields of mutual interests such as economy, trade, education, culture, arts, tourism and sports to increase the mutual understanding of the people of each city.

Liew and Wang deliberated on ways to enhance collaboration in the education, culture, tourism, trade and investment sectors for the benefit of Sabah and Hangzhou.

Among the proposals are to initiate student and civil servant exchange programmes which will be further discussed.

The duo noted that there are similarities between Sabah and Hangzhou in terms of Unesco-recognised heritage sites, tourism products and colourful culture.

According to Liew, the Memorandum of Implementation of Friendship City Relationship is expected to be signed in Sabah before the end of the year. “We have extended our invitation to Vice-Mayor Wang Hong to come to Sabah for the signing ceremony,” she said.
