Let our girls compete: Coach
KOTA KINABALU: State women artistic gymnastics coach Liew Tong Ee (pic) urged Sabah Sports Council (MSN) to consider letting the girls participate in Sukma 2020 in Johor next year.

He said on Wednesday that Felicity Grace Sew Pei En, Nur Farisha Atiqah Shuiali, Amanda Wong Yeah Chean, Natalie Yapp Qian Tong, Cherfie Resie Chong and Jill Avie Horation are currently the six athletes proposed to represent the State after two selection trials were held in May and August with Jenniesa Jiniol and Tan Mui Kun on the waiting list.

Sabah girls artistic gymnasts did not take part in the last Sukma in Perak, but were in Sukma Sarawak 2016 where they finished in fifth place.

The athletes then were Amanda, Farisha, Jill, Jenniesia while Felicity was on the list but she opted to go to the Asean School Games with the national contingent instead.

In Perak – with Sabah opting not to send any girls – Felicity, Farisha and Cherfie were recruited by Kedah while Amanda represented Perak.

Liew believed the girls are now ready to do well in the biennial games after a four-year lapse.

“In Sarawak, it was a transition period where we were represented by the juniors in their first outing.

“The 2020 Sukma will be our best chance as our athletes are at the right age and with better experience. The girls deserved a chance to represent Sabah again after years of training.

“The recent results at the national and Sportexcel Championship where we won the team gold for girls senior and silver for girls junior, hopefully the achievement will convince MSN Sabah to send them to compete next year.

“Apart from that, the girls also did well at the MSSM in Kedah this year by taking the team Under-18 gold and three of the athletes were Felicity, Farisha and Jill while the girls Under-15 that won bronze included Amanda, Cherfie and Natalie,” he said.

Meanwhile, he also disclosed that only four boys are listed for Sukma 2020 by MSN Sabah to date.

The four are Bandar Penawar based Brandon Denoley Luise, Ammar Zafi Mohd Firdaus @ Sylvester, Abd Izzat Daniel Rauf and Charlie Richie Chong, and they have proposed Liew Jun Xiang and Jacob Hezron Andreas with Albert Wong Wui Pin on the waiting list to complete the list.
