Marudu tube well project gets Ministry’s support
KOTA MARUDU: Rural Development Minister, Datuk Ewon Benedick welcomed the effort by Mineral and Geoscience Department (JMG) Sabah to implement a tube well project as an alternative source for clean water supply for rural people in the State.

He hoped through the continuous support, collaboration and expertise assistance from JMG, water supply problem faced by rural villages including at Mini Estet Sejahtera (Mesej) and Kampung Sejahtera, among others can be resolved.

“The Ministry has forged a collaboration with JMG Sabah to identify underground water sources in rural areas which frequently face water supply problems including at Mesej and Kampung Sejahtera.

“JMG has the hydrogeology expertise and technology to identify underground water source that can be used as alternative source for clean water supply.

“Last August, we had held our first meeting with JMG Sabah to invite it be a member with Mesej Steering Committee and so far the department has carried out several underground water source studies at several locations in Kota Belud and Tenom,” he said when officiating at the launching of Geoscience Public Education and Awareness Programme 2019 at the District Community Hall here.

His speech was read by Assistant Minister of Rura Development, Rasinin Koutis.

Ewon, who is also Kadamaian Assemblyman, hopes that JMG Sabah will expand its efforts to build tube well in rural areas that frequently face water problem, which is in line with the Government effort to provide clean water supply to all rural villages in Sabah by 2025.

On the tube well and well system that was built at Kampung Pompodon, he said the project cost about RM120,000 and will benefit some 200 villagers.

“So, I hope the villagers will really look after the tube well,” he said.

He said public education and awareness programme is, among others, aimed at increasing the level of readiness and education of the local community in facing geological disasters and to provide information on the department’s role in improving the wellbeing of villagers.

He said it was a continuation of a series of similar programmes implemented by JMG after the earthquake in 2015.

JMG Sabah will continue the programme in other districts like Ranau and Kota Belud where the focus is on instilling awareness on natural disasters, particularly geological disaster.

JMG Sabah Acting Deputy Director, Webster Wong, and Head of Hydrogeology Activity, Jaineh Lingi, among others, were also present.
