Kota Kinabalu: Gelsoft, a competitive team shooting sport in which participants, both children and adults, shoot opponents and targets with soft gel balls via battery-powered Gelsoft blasters, is fast becoming a hit in Sabah.
Sabah Gelsoft Association President, George Tann Junior, said at present there have 35 registered teams with over 1,000 members throughout the State.
Expecting the number will increase when they are already capable of producing the blasters (guns) and gel balls, he said they plan to set up a Gelsoft manufacturing factory soon in Penampang. He said the factory would also help to provide jobs to local youths apart from acquiring skills.
“We will manufacture Gelsoft blasters in Penampang which will not only encourage more people to join in this sport but also provide jobs to the locals,” he said at the launching of Gelsoft Sabah at Marriott Hotel.
It was officiated by International Trade and Industry Minister-cum-Penampang MP, Datuk Darell Leiking, who also witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Sabah and Australia blaster in manufacturing, selling and partnership.
It was signed and exchanged between Junior, who represented Sabah blaster, and Gelsoft Australia’s Chief International Officer, Siva Sara.
Met by reporters later, Leiking said he is pleased with the Gelsoft collaboration between Malaysia (Sabah) and Australia because it is not just a sport that is benefit the people’s health but also open opportunity for Sabah to become an exporter of Gelsoft blasters.
“It is an amazing extreme sport. The association is in the process of applying to the Government to manufacture Gelsoft blasters here in Sabah.
“Hopefully, when this become a reality they will not only manufacture blasters for local players but will also export it. First they need to sort out any legalities with the police,” he said, adding that he fully support it because not only it is a healthy activity but also encourages interaction between people.
