Sabah set 40-gold target at Sukma

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah is aiming for 40 golds in the 20th edition of the Malaysian Games (Sukma) which will take place from July 11 to 19 in Johor.

Youth and Sports Minister, Phoong Jin Zhe said the Sabah contingent wanted to reach the target of 40 gold medals by participating in 28 sports events at the Games.

“This year, the Sabah contingent is aiming for 40 gold medals in 28 sports events from 31 different sports including aquatics, badminton, cycling, men’s soccer, gymnastics, men’s and women’s hockey, lawn bowls, athletics and archery.

“In addition, the Sabah contingent will also compete in squash, ten-pin bowling, weightlifting, netball, men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, golf, petanque, women’s rugby, men’s and women’s soccer as well as tennis.

“There will also be events such as sailing, pencak silat, wushu, judo, Muay Thai, boxing, karate and e-sports as well,” he said at a press conference at the Sabah Youth and Sports Ministry’s main meeting room in Wisma Muis, here, Tuesday.

Phoong also said that 791 potential athletes have been registered to join the Sabah contingent for the 20th Sukma Games.

“To date, the Sabah Sukma Secretariat has registered 791 athletes comprising 405 male athletes and 299 female athletes besides 87 officials.

The State contingent will be headed by the Ministry’s permanent secretary, Mohd Yusrie Abdullah.

“However, this list will only be finalised by the end of May to determine the total strength of the Sabah contingent to the 20th Sukma Games,” he said.

He also said that the selection of sports participation this time around was based on the merits of sports achievements over the last two years.

“The choice of sports participation this time around is based on the merits of the sports achievements during 2018 and 2019, for those who do not reach the merit to Sukma can still participate with the expenses borne by their respective sports associations.

“In the event of winning a medal, we will reimburse the expenses incurred to the annual grant of their respective sports associations.

“For sports events with self-financing that win silver or bronze medals, a 50 per cent refund will be given to the respective sports associations while for the gold medal, a 100 per cent refund will be given,” he said.
