Special boat services proposed for students on Sandakan island

SANDAKAN: Special boat services to pick up and send schoolchildren from Kg Pulau Tanjung Aru, off here, to mainland are essential for their convenience.Sandakan Member of Parliament Vivian Wong said this preliminary proposal will also look into granting subsidies to boat operators and reducing the cost of school fees for students who attend schools here.

“We have also received this proposal from parents of students of Kg Pulau Tanjung Aru.
“We will look into the best approaches and suggestions that we have received from residents, especially to help students who use sea transport,” he told reporters after visiting Kg Pulau Tanjung Aru, Friday.
During the event, she presented donations to 28 secondary students and the public involved in the search and rescue operation following the boat collision incident.
A dialogue session with the villagers was also held to find out the needs of the villagers, especially children who go to schools in Sandakan from the village.

Meanwhile, Sukau Assemblyman Datuk Saddi Abdul Rahman said the construction of a secondary school on Pulau Tanjung Aru here should be hastened to ensure the safety of students from the island who have to travel via boat daily to reach school in Sandakan town.
He said this was following the boat collision in the waters off Sandakan which involved students from the island.

“I hope the request can be included in the 12th Malaysian Plan,” he told reporters after presenting financial aid to the victims of the incident, here, Friday.
Saddi also proposed that a dormitory be built in Sandakan town for students from Pulau Tanjung Aru to avoid such unfortunate incident from recurring, pending construction of the secondary school.

In the accident at about 6am, a passenger boat with 37 on board, including students, was involved in a crash with a boat being towed by a ship, leaving 14 people injured.
