Nine firms are keen on Labuan bridge project
LABUAN: Even at this early stage, nine companies have expressed interest in the proposed Labuan-Menumbok bridge.

Federal Territories Minister Khalid Abdul Samad said in a written reply to Labuan Member of Parliament, Datuk Rozman Isli which was released this week by the MP’s office. The Minister said that the nine companies include foreign as well as Malaysian and three routes have been proposed for the connection namely:

Tg. Aru Labuan-Lambidan Sabah (13.18km)

Pusat Bandar Labuan-Mempakul Sabah (8.30km)

Pusat Bandar Labuan-Pulau Daat, Mempakul (9.05km)

Khalid said that the third option was attractive and economical as Pulau Daat (an island across Labuan harbour) would become a tourism  potential as well as Mempakul would also benefit.

He noted that the Public Works Department which is responsible for mega development projects had been tasked with preparing the Request For Proposal (RFP) as the bridge would be a private-sector initiative and was expected to be ready by April this year.

He went on to say that in January, the Federal Cabinet had nodded the project and the Sabah Government had also given the greenlight during discussions last August.

Rozman had repeatedly called for the bridge project to proceed even during his first term as MP under Barisan Nasional. He strongly felt that the link would be a “a game changer” and boost the economy of Labuan as well as Sabah.

Will China, which is so occupied with the coronavirus outbreak, still be keen to be a player, according to Labuan Chinese Chamber of Commerce Chairman Datuk Wong Kii Yii, China was effectively handing the outbreak and don’t expect it to last long.
