She was given an on-the-spot briefing by City Hall (DBKK) Deputy Director-General (Operations) Lifred Wong, Landscape Department Director Robert Lipon and Landscape Architect Datin Dr Noridawati Abdul Rahman.

“Under Phases One and Two of the City Park Landscape Development Proposal), the City Park covering the Memorial (in memory of the Australian Armed Forces who gave their lives in the defence of Sabah (British North Borneo) during the Second World War (1939-1945) and the area where the Time Capsule was planted on Feb 2, 2000 (in conjunction with the Declaration of Kota Kinabalu as the sixth city of Malaysia) will be upgraded.

Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said the two projects together would add 28MWac of new power generation capacity, helping to stabilise electricity supply in Sabah.
“We hope to get it done in time for the commemoration of Anzac Day which falls on April 25,” she said. (Anzac Day is a national day of remembrance in Australia and New Zealand).

Liew, who is also Deputy Chief Minister, said Phase Three will see the enhancement of the neighbouring Taman Chong Thien Vun under DBKK’s proposal for improvement works on the park.

The Api Api Assemblywoman, who was accompanied by Api Api Community Development Leader Grace Lee and the Ministry’s Public Relations Officer Josephine Chin, agreed to look into the request for a police pondok (police beat base) to be located at Kg Air to beef up the level of security for locals and tourists alike. “We will identify a strategic spot for the purpose, and construction of this facility is expected to take place in Phase Four,” she said. Present was Sub-Inspector Rashidi Nawawi.

Meanwhile, Liew hoped that the old concrete canopies of shop houses at Kg Air would be replaced with awnings while suggesting mural painting by the shop houses as a tourist attraction.

“This will give the shop lots a clean and beautiful look,” she added.
