KUCHING: Sarawak Chief Minister Abang Johari Openg has announced an additional RM16.4 million in food assistance for the poor in rural and urban areas to mitigate the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic in the state.

He said the aid was also for those who were homeless and who had lost their jobs.

“This is in addition to the Sarawakku Sayang package worth RM1.15 billion announced by the state government on Monday to reduce the burden of the people,” he said at a press conference.

Deputy Chief Minister Awang Tengah Ali Hassan, who heads the food supply chain sub-committee, said the state government would ensure the aid reaches the rural areas.

He said the committee would work with the Fire and Rescue Department and the army to ensure the food was distributed as most of the roads were in poor condition.

“We have identified several areas in the interior, for example Bario, Belaga, Baram Ba’kelalan, Long Semado, Pulau Bruit and Kapit,” he said. – FMT
