Major Tawau water theft find after pipe burst
Dept officers removing illegal connections to the main pipe.
TAWAU: District Water Department disconnected eight illegal connections at Mile 4, Jalan Apas, here which supplied water to Kampung Sri Aman squatter colonies here Wednesday.

District Water Engineer, Asabri Robenson, said they made the discovery when they went to check on a complaint of water pipe burst, with the assistance of a contractor for that area.

“We found out the water was flowing out from an illegal connection which had been connected direct to an AC-typed 225-milimetre pipe in the Mile 4 Jalan Apas area.
“We detected there were eight illegal connection which had been connected to the main pipe under the Telekom Malaysia Berhad’s concrete main hole,” he said, adding they had disconnected all the illegal connection with the contractor’s assistance.

Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said the two projects together would add 28MWac of new power generation capacity, helping to stabilise electricity supply in Sabah.
The department believes the illegal water connection were done by an irresponsible individual to supply water illegally to Kg Sri Aman squatter colony and other such illegal settlements nearby. Asabri said they also seized the poly pipes in various sizes and clamp saddles used for further action.

He said illegal water connection is an offence under Section 49(b) and Section 53 of the Sabah Water Supply Enactment 2003, which provide a fine up to RM50,000 or two years’ jail, if convicted. Urging all water consumers to comply with the requirement of the said Act, he said the department will not hesitate to take action accordingly against those flouting the law.

He also call for cooperation from the public to report any water theft or pipe leakage immediately to the department’s Careline no: 088326888.
