SANDAKAN: Sandakan Chinese Youth Association is jointly holding a blood donation campaign with Hospital Duchess of Kent (HDOK) to replenish blood supply for HDOK’s blood bank unit during the Movement Control Order (MCO).

The association’s Deputy Chairman-cum-Organising Chairman of the campaign, John Lai Wing Kit, said the campaign is from April 16 until 20, at two separate venues here.

He said the two venues are at fourth floor of HDOK’s Blood Bank and Sejati Walk Mile 7 (Centre Court, first floor) from 10am till 4pm.

“Only four people are allowed to donate blood at a time in order to avoid crowds at the blood donation stations.

“Hence, donors are asked to contact the blood bank hotline at 017-311 3546 for registration before going to the blood donation station so suitable schedule could be arranged. “We will also ensure that safe social distancing would be practised by all medical staff and donors,” he said.

Lai said medical personnel at the stations would check the body temperature of each donor, who would also be given hand washing liquid to ensure optimum safety during the blood donation process.

He said each donor will also receive a goodie bag with food items including rice, dry noodles, instant noodles, condensed milk, coffee, cooking oil, flour and biscuit, as well as a three-ply face mask from the association.

Lai appealed to the people in Sandakan to support the blood donation campaign and donate blood to save lives. “Blood supply in HDOK’s blood bank is running low because people are sceptical on the safety measures taken during blood donation process at the hospital during this time. Many such campaigns were cancelled due to MCO. “However, patients in HDOK still need continuous blood supply. Hence, I call upon the local community to support this campaign and donate blood. Your blood could save lives,” he said.
