TAWAU: A 41-year-old shop assistant was jailed a week and fined RM10,000 or three months’ jail for bribing RM50 to a policeman.
Iwan pleaded guilty before Sessions Court Judge Abu Bakar Manat to the charge against him.
Iwan offered the bribe to Constable Firhan Yusuf as inducement to not take action against him for not having a driving licence at 5.30pm on Apr 22 this year during a roadblock at Jalan Kuhara near Taman Anson, here.
The offence under Section 17(b) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009 provides for a jail term of up to 20 years and a fine of not less than five times the amount of bribe received or RM10,000, whichever is higher, on conviction.
The court heard that Iwan was stopped by the police during the roadblock and was ordered to produce his driving licence.
Iwan then tried to put a RM50 note inside the policeman’s pocket but he was arrested instead and brought to the police station for further action.
On Apr 23, Iwan surrendered to Tawau MACC for further investigation into the corruption case.
MACC Prosecuting Officer Clementine Severinus prosecuted.
